| The LITA Distance Learning Interest Group met on Monday, February 1, 1999. Susan Logue made several announcements. The National Forum (a 2-day program) will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina during the 2nd week in November. The Convention Hall has been requested for the Program at the Annual Meeting in New Orleans at 2:00 on Sunday the 27th. The program will focus on positioning academic libraries for active participation in distance learning activities. Topics include: web design using Toolbook II and Frontpage 2000; PERL-based and RealMedia products to develop virtual library tours; and interactive learning modules. Trish Roseel of ARL OLMS is working with Southern Illinois University at Carbondale to develop a web-based course for librarians on training skills.
After the managed discussion, the LITA Distance Learning Interest Group had a business meeting. Similarities between the Distance Learning Interest Group and other groups were discussed. We need to ensure the programs are sufficiently distinct. As the leadership of the two groups becomes better acquainted, possibilities include partnerships in joint publicity or holding programs on the same day. Susan restated the mission of the Distance Learning Interest Group which is to look at the use of technology to support distance learning activities in libraries.
Martin Kesselman suggested a program about technology for international distance learning courses in the year 2000. University of Maryland at College Park, Southern Illinois University, University of Central Florida, and the British Open University were mentioned. International cooperation usually involves more, but lower, technology. There was some discussion about theories of learning, methods of approaching evaluation, and effective design components for online instruction. Authentication was suggested as a program topic as it is one of the top trends topics.
Susan Logue announced elections would be handled by email for offices for next year and using a listserv as a mechanism to distribute information to members. There was discussion about having product vendors exhibit their wares. The possibility of a pre-conference was introduced with potential concerns raised regarding the risk of high costs and cancellation due to low registration. Discussion will continue on the listserv but a team needs to develop a proposal based on this meeting. The group adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
