This project requires you to collect data through a search of the internet for items dealing with cultural diversity, and then to write an analytic essay in which you compare and contrast those items with the materials in Unit 1, "Introduction" to Anth. 202.
Follow these directions:
I. Write down your definition of "cultural diversity", based on your own life experience.
II. Collect data
- Use google.com as your search engine.
- Search using the term "cultural diversity"
- Print out the page with the returns from the search.
- Select 10 items from those returned and open those pages.
- Print out at least the first page of each site.
- Select 5 of these sites for further analysis. You may select them randomly, or because they interest you.
II. Analyze data
- Use the following questions to analyze the data, filling in the worksheets.
- a. How is the term "cultural diversity" defined? If the term is not specifically defined, how is it used? What definition do you infer from this usage?
- b. What issues does the site (page) address?
- c. Why are the authors of the site concerned with cultural diversity?
- Review the readings in the "Introduction" to the text, using these same questions.
III. Analytic report
- State what you thought "cultural diversity" meant before you did this project. In the conclusion to your essay, state in what ways your understanding of the concept "cultural diversity" changed after reading the sties and readings you analyzed.
- Compare and contrast the sites you located on the Web with each other and with the articles in the text.
a. Do the definitions seem to be the same, or different?
b. Do they address similar issues, or are they different?
c. Are their concerns regarding diversity similar, or different?
In your responses, be specific. Use data (examples) from the readings, and from the web sites. Be sure to cite the pages you refer to.
- Staple together your data (the print-outs from the search and the web sites; analysis worksheets), and turn them in with your analytic essay.
