More information on Dakota culture and language

David Little Elk's Language Course http://www.malakota.com/lak_lesson.htm
If you google "Dakota Lakota Language" you will find a large number of sources. This one is interesting, and authoritative. The site says, "as of August 2002, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Council proclaimed his Lakota Language course to be the OFFICIAL Lakota Language Course of the tribe" (http://www.studymed.de/lakotabk.html)

Lakota and Dakota are different dialects, and different, groups of Sioux. A third dialects also exists, the Nakota. See http://www.hanksville.org/daniel/lakota/Lakota.html

More on Dakota kinship relations, this lesson written by Lydia Whirlwind Soldier: http://www.tcsdk12.org/cmc/Lakota/kinship.htm

PBS did a documentary on the Pine Ridge reservation,
Homeland. "HOMELAND is the rich and engaging story of four Lakota Indian families from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This emotionally compelling film weaves a portrait of a spiritual leader, a grandmother, a community activist and an artist over the course of three years. HOMELAND follows these families as they face the harsh realities common to most American Indian reservations - alcoholism, unemployment and scarce housing. With their family loyalty, spiritual devotion and keen sense of humor, they work to build a better life for their children and future generations." http://www.pbs.org/itvs/homeland/story.html

For more about Iktomi, google his name. A story about Iktomi is posted here: http://www.earthbow.com/native/lakota/muskrat.htm

Project Gutenberg and the another source, Electronic Text Center, University of Virginia Library, has a book of Iktomi stories available for download. The Electronic Text Center has some illustrations.

Note: Iktomi (Unktomi) is a trickster spider imp who teaches by giving "bad" examples.

More and more information on American Indian tribes and nations is available on the web. Much of this information is written for teaching children of the tribe about their language and culture. Be careful when you google a topic, because there's a lot of Indian wannabe hooey out there, as well.
