Physician Assistant Program

Southern Illinois University Carbondale

Master’s Completion Distance Learning Program

Application Information, Requirements and Checklist

The advantages of having a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies are increasing every day and so are the monetary and personal rewards.  Therefore, more and more practicing Physician Assistants (PA) are registering to take the Master’s Completion Program (MCP).  Since these professionals are working a demanding job already, on-campus classes for graduate study poses many problems; and, in some cases, makes it impossible.  That is why this program has been instituted.  It provides an avenue to obtain the MCP in a fair length of time, that is affordable and without the undue hardship of displacement and long distance travel. Upon completion of this program, the student will earn a Master of Science Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPA).

All applicants must be a graduate of an accredited PA Program and hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and be employed in a clinical position.

The applicant must have obtained a cumulative GPA for the Bachelor’s coursework of least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

A copy of the current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) must be submitted along with the application.

The tuition will be billed after an applicant is accepted into the program.  Applicant will be notified if there are other charges and fees for which they are responsible.  Notification will also be given if the program provides related materials.  Applicants should contact the Financial Aid Office at (618) 453-4334 for more detailed information on loans, grants, etc.

The application process will follow the regular University calendar.  The Admissions Committee will review all applications, and a letter will be mailed notifying the applicant of the Committee’s decision.  If other information is needed, the applicant will be contacted.  Upon acceptance, the applicant will be sent all necessary coursework materials and notified as to their start date.

To receive a degree, all assignments, including clinical time records, patient logs, preceptor evaluations, reports on health issues and ethics, and other work, must be received by the program as described in the syllabi.

An official letter will be sent to notify the student that the MCP has been earned.  This same letter will serve as proof that all work towards the degree is completed.  Official certificates will be mailed at a later date so make sure that the address you are providing the program is a correct one.
